Sonoran UCEDD Updates
Summer 2018

Jared Shultz headshotDr. Jared Schultz will be joining us in July as the Director of Research for the Sonoran UCEDD and Professor in the Department of Disability and Psychoeducational Studies, where he will be teaching courses in the Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling program.

Jared has been at Utah State University for the last 14 years, and has served as the Rehabilitation Counseling Program Chair for the last eight years. Prior to that he has worked at the Texas Tech University Health Science Center and the Oregon Health Sciences University. His work in disability began when he was just out of college and worked in a community mental health program in Oregon for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. Since then he has worked in a variety settings. His work has focused primarily in the area of community based competitive employment, and transition services for youth with disabilities. At Utah State University, Jared was involved in establishing the Employability Clinic (a program established to work with consumers of the public vocational rehabilitation program who were on the verge of being closed as “unemployable”), as well as a residential based post-secondary program for college students with developmental and intellectual disabilities called Aggies Elevated.

As we were writing this introduction, he wanted the readers to know that “I am so excited for this opportunity to work with the Sonoran UCEDD. This is an opportunity for me to get back to doing the things that I love to do, which are being engaged with the community, and helping individuals with disabilities to realize their potential. I enjoy doing applied research that is focused on finding the best way to help people in real life situations. Mostly, I believe in the power of community to transform individuals and families, and I look forward to being a part of the Arizona disability community.”

Jared and his wife, Deeann, have four daughters and one son in law. He enjoys reading, fishing, and playing guitar.

Join us in welcoming Jared to Arizona and the Sonoran UCEDD family!
