Advancing Employment Opportunities for People with Disabilities

The White House Summit on Disability and Employment was held on February 3rd. The Summit provided information on new and existing Federal resources designed to help employers hire more individuals with disabilities and made available the new Resource Guide for Employers. Attendees also shared their experiences in diversifying their workforce through effective strategies to successfully recruit, hire, promote, and retain employees with disabilities. Hiring employees with disabilities makes good business sense.

In July 2010, President Obama issued Executive Order 13548, Increasing Federal Employment of Individuals with Disabilities, and committed to increase the number ofEmployee with a Disability individuals with disabilities in the Federal workforce.

Today, 56.7 million Americans, or 19% of the population, live with disabilities. However, nearly 70% of people with disabilities have been left out of the American workforce.  The 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is approaching and more work must be done to ensure that people with disabilities have equal opportunities to succeed.
