Photo of Andy ImparatoThe Sonoran UCEDD was honored to host Andy Imparato’s first visit to Tucson. Andy is the Executive Director of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) a network of centers advancing policy and practice for individuals with disabilities, their families, and communities. Andy is a nationally known disability rights attorney and advocate who served as Senator Tom Harkin's disability policy director and as former leader of two key national disability organizations.
UCEDD staff members were able meet with Andy where he learned more about the various projects we are currently working on, and provided us with information on national trends and ideas for future projects and initiatives.  Community stakeholders joined us over lunch with Andy to discuss disability and the university as well as policy issues on the horizon.

Andy ended the day with a public presentation and reception with over 150 individuals participating either in person or through live streaming of the event. Andy’s talk, “Disability Rights at a Crossroads: Where the US Disability Movement is Headed in 2016 and Beyond” covered the progress we’ve made as well as current threats to progress 25 years after the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act and 40 years after enactment of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and 50 years of Medicaid and the Voting Rights Act.  These important milestone anniversaries were reflected upon and the audience was engaged in discussion about what’s next in disability law and policy at the federal level.

This event was available via live stream and is now archived.  You can watch this engaging closed captioned presentation at
